What Material Would You Use For a Backyard Play Area?

  • Blog

With school back in full swing, kids are using playgrounds daily. Being kids, once they come home they will want to continue the fun they have had all day. Maybe you already have a backyard play area, or maybe you are planning on getting one soon to have somewhere for your kids and their friends to safely play. But you find yourself uncertain that the grass and dirt would be the best material for a backyard play area. So then, we listed a few great materials below.

Rubber Mulch

Rubber mulch may not be the first material you would think of when considering material for your play area, as you likely were not aware of its usefulness. However, rubber mulch is a great, safe option! It is typically made up of recycled shredded tires and typically comes in as nuggets or in shreds. Then a non-toxic coat is applied and you have a reliable, soft surface that requires minimal maintenance for the fraction of solid rubber.

Artificial Grass/Turf

Another great low-maintenance option is artificial turf. It also has the wonderful aspect of appearing like grass and providing a great aesthetic. Additionally, while rubber mulch is not very ADA wheelchair accessible, turf will still provide the ability for wheels to roll. Water drains quite well from it, similar to real grass, so it can reduce or even improve drainage issues if you are worried about them.

Solid Rubber

Solid rubber is hands down the safest and easiest to maintain surface for a backyard play area. However, for all that convenience and safety, it happens to cost the most out of any of the other great materials. Solid rubber is also quite slip-resistant and is very ADA wheelchair accessible, like turf is. If you can shell out the cash, solid rubber would most likely be your best choice of material.

Engineered Wood Fiber

If you want to provide the most down-to-earth experience for your children in their backyard play area, look no further than engineered wood fiber. Sometimes called EWF, it is durable and affordable, and most importantly, it is safer than regular wood chips. EWF is ground more finely than typical wood chips and has had all sawdust removed. It’s the closest you can be to the great outdoors in your own backyard.
